For the upcoming 2025 spring season we will be open from April 9th to May 25th.
Why Visit Peony Garden Tokyo?
Since 1989, our 100% organic garden has delighted guests with tree peonies (botan) and stem peonies (shakuyaku)—both flourishing under our unique composting and enzyme farming methods. With one of the largest peony collections in Japan, we blend tradition, innovation, and sustainability to offer an unforgettable experience
Over 50,000 Peonies: Featuring rare and historical varieties you won’t find anywhere else.
150-Year-Old Peony: A living legend that still blooms every season.
Scenic Crater Lake: Home to kingfishers, herons, and other native bird species.
On-Site Restaurant: Enjoy local dishes, including our original sweet potato latte.
The Power of Our Soil
A defining feature of Peony Garden Tokyo is our revolutionary approach to soil health. By harnessing enzyme-based composting, we’ve developed a rich, balanced microbe community that not only supports our own peonies, but also helps farmers produce healthier crops with fewer chemicals.
Microbial Abundance: Our compost is 1 million times richer in microbes compared to conventional methods. These microbes break down organic matter more efficiently, leading to healthy soil.
Higher Yields: Farmers who use our compost often see 1.3–3.0 times more harvest, with a notable reduction in pests and diseases.
Less Reliance on Chemicals: By restoring the natural balance of the soil, we reduce the need for pesticides, while improving the taste and nutritional value of crops.
Enzyme Farming: We use enzymes to speed up the decomposition of organic matter—a process that would otherwise take years in nature. This “short-period fermentation” boosts soil quality quickly and sustainably.
A Collaboration of Science & Craftsmanship
Enzyme Farming
Our “enzyme farming” technology began as a solution to the continuous cropping issues for peonies, but over the past 20 years, it’s proven valuable to dedicated farmers seeking pesticide-free methods.
Academic Evidence
In partnership with Ibaraki University and other research institutes, we’re establishing academic evidence for these groundbreaking practices.
Revitalize Agriculture
Our goal is to revitalize Japan’s agriculture and food industries—starting from the ground up, by enhancing soil quality and fostering healthier ecosystems.
